Young Blind Pianist Wins International Competition

Lucy may have been blind but she never lost sight of the talent, determination, and skill that she had. At nine months old, she was diagnosed with a rare eye cancer with tumors behind both of her eyes. For two years, she underwent chemotherapy before going into remission.

While the cancer left Lucy completely blind, she was able to see her gift as a silver lining. From a young age, she already had a deep love and passion for music. Growing up in a nurturing family, she later discovered her innate talent in playing the piano.

Through time, Lucy’s musical prowess grew stronger, giving her the confidence and power to pursue a career in music. Rather than letting her disability hold her back, Lucy embraced her true self and transformed herself to overcome the obstacles.

Even with autism and learning disabilities, she was able to develop her skills with the help of the musical charity, The Amber Trust. It is a charity that provides musical opportunities for the partially-sighted and blind children.

She was trained by Daniel Bath, a teacher who she met at the age of four years old. Daniel recalled that he met Lucy in a ball pool and as he put a small keyboard under her hand, she started playing Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

Although Lucy already had the talent, improving her skills was not easy. Her teacher shared that in the beginning, Lucy could not listen to a musical piece for longer than 10 seconds. Fortunately, he was able to train Lucy by playing the entire piece and asking Lucy to recall what she remembers. With Daniel guiding Lucy, she realized how to improvise and learn. Little did they know that their teamwork would eventually amaze the whole world when Lucy entered the piano competition.

In February 2023, Lucy gave the performance of a lifetime in Channel 4’s “The Piano”. She took her confidence and grace to the stage, delivering her sensational rendition of Chopin’s Nocturne in B-flat Minor. Pouring her heart and soul into every note, the crowd erupted into applause as she played the final chords. And that night, she won an award for performance of the night.

With a well-deserved victory, Lucy earned worldwide acclaim in the music community. She served as an inspiration to people who face similar challenges. Later on, the Lang Lang International Music Foundation declared Lucy as an international ambassador alongside other youthful talents.

After the competition, Lucy was able to showcase her talent to a wider audience. She later performed in local, national, and international stages while recording her music and exploring different genres. With her heart, gift, and story, Lucy continues to be a promising pianist.

Lucy’s legacy is a resounding reminder that the power of music transforms in ways beyond imagination. Her story is about a girl who did not let anything define her. She chose to believe in herself and focus on her talent. Not only was Lucy able to achieve her dream but she also became an inspiration for other people to reach their own dreams.
